Our Doulas

Sara, Anne and Tara

Doula is a word with Greek origins meaning β€œa woman who serves”. Today, doula refers to a trained professional who will provide the emotional, physical and informational support before, during and after childbirth. Research shows that women need fewer medical interventions when they have a doula by their side. We undertake ongoing CPD training to enhance our skills. We are all members of Doula UK and abide by their code of conduct.

 FAQs

  • A birth doula is a trained professional who provides continuous physical, emotional, and informational support to a family before, during, and after birth. Their role is to help the birthing person feel confident, informed, and supported throughout their time together. Doulas do not provide medical care, but they work alongside healthcare providers to support birth preferences and promote a positive birth experience.

  • You can hire a doula at any stage of pregnancy, but the earlier you do, the more time you’ll have to build a strong relationship and plan for your birth. Early support can be especially helpful for preparing emotionally and physically. However, doulas can still provide valuable guidance and care even if hired closer to your due date.

  • The cost of a doula can vary widely depending on location, experience, and the services offered. On average birth doulas charge between Β£800-Β£1500. This fee often includes antenatal visits, support during labour and birth, and a postnatal follow-up. Many doulas offer packages that can be tailored to your needs.

  • In most cases, yesβ€”doulas are allowed in hospitals as part of your birth support team. However, hospital policies can vary and it's a good idea to check with your chosen hospital in advance and inform your care provider that you plan to have a doula. Many hospitals recognise the value of doulas and welcome their presence.

  • A doula can provide valuable support before, during, and after a caesarean birthβ€”whether it’s planned or unplanned. Before surgery, a doula can help prepare you emotionally, answers questions, and offers calming support. If allowed in the operating room, the doula can offer reassurance, help you stay focused, and support your partner. After the birth, they can support with comfort, initial breastfeeding, and emotional processing of the experience. Their presence can help make a caesarean feel more informed, supported, and empowering.

  • There are many organisations that offer free advice and support if you are experiencing a baby loss in your pregnancy.  A doula can support you to navigate the various options available to you.  For clinical care, you can contact your midwife (if you have already had a booking in appointment), or your GP.

  • Item description
  • A midwife is a medical professional trained to provide clinical care throughout pregnancy, birth and early postnatal. They can monitor the baby, perform medical assessments, support the birth of the baby, and support any special circumstances within their scope of practice.
A doula, on the other hand, is not a medical provider. Doulas offer emotional, physical, and informational support before, during, and after birth. They focus on comfort, advocacy, and helping you feel informed and supportedβ€”but they don’t perform medical tasks.

  • A postnatal doula provides support to new parents and their baby after birth. They help with newborn care, breastfeeding guidance, emotional support, and household tasks like meal prep or light cleaning. Their goal is to ease the transition to parenthood and help parents feel confident and rested during those early newborn days and weeks.

  • Hypnobirthing is a tried and proven technique to prepare you for your birthing experience. It’s not just about preparing your body, but also preparing your mind and having a calm, positive mindset as you prepare to meet your baby. The programme includes education around labour and childbirth, affirmations, relaxation and deep meditative practice, breathing techniques and visualisations.

  • There are many ways and tools at your disposal that can help, from a birth debrief with a health professional (normally the Consultant Midwife or an obstetrician in the Trust where you have given birth) to support from the perinatal mental health teams. What we can offer is called the 3 Step Process, which is a very effective way to disentangle the emotions and feelings about your birth, with the memories of that birth. It is a gentle method guided by you and your wishes for your future self.

  • There are various online doula training courses available to you but if you want an in-person training course, please get in touch!  We run the training course once a year and you can register online.  If you want to express your interest, please complete the contact us form and one of us will be in touch to answer any questions you may have.

  • Labour can start in various ways, but the most common are crampy feelings low in your belly or low back ache that evolve into contractions, and the release of your waters.  Another sign can be a birth show which is like a flash of blood, or blood-stained mucous.  You can contact your midwife or call the maternity unit to chat over how you are feeling.  A doula can also offer reassurance at this early stage of labour and offer comfort measures to keep you calm and relaxed.
