A note on language: “woman” and “birthing person”

Last updated: 02/07/2026

As doulas, we are here to support you and your family in a way that feels right for you.

Many of the people we support identify as women, and “woman” is a word that is commonly used in birth work, research, and guidance. At the same time, we know that not everyone who is pregnant or giving birth identifies as a woman.

In our work, we keep things simple and person-centred. This means we:

Use the words each person chooses for themselves

Stay open and respectful to different identities and experiences

Use a mix of language, such as “woman,” “birthing person,” or “pregnant person,” depending on what feels appropriate in the moment

Our focus is always on offering support that is tailored to you — your needs, your preferences, and your experience of pregnancy, birth, and early parenthood.

For us, language is part of how we create a safe and welcoming space. It’s not about getting every word “perfect,” but about listening, being kind, and making sure each person feels respected and included.
